Student Research Survey: Attention Oncology GCs
Greetings! I'm inviting all current and former adult oncology GCs to participate in a research project exploring adult oncology GCs' involvement in discussions about medical assistance in dying (MAID) with patients in the United States.
MAID refers to the practice in which a qualified healthcare provider assists a terminally ill patient in ending their own life through prescribed medications. Due to the eligibility criteria, most individuals pursuing MAID are cancer patients.
As MAID becomes increasingly available across the U.S., oncology patients with advanced cancer may seek support from their healthcare providers, including genetic counselors. However, little is known about how genetic counselors are involved in these conversations or how prepared they feel to navigate them. This study aims to assess the prevalence and context of MAID discussions between oncology genetic counselors and their patients, as well as factors that may influence GC participation in these conversations. The study was approved by the UAMS IRB (Study number #298487).
